Biosphere collaboration

The Southern Uplands Partnership was established by local people wanting to see a new approach to land use across the Southern Uplands. The land provides the basis for all our livelihoods, and if we are creative and wise, we can sustain ourselves and our communities while at the same time allowing ecosystems to thrive. Where we damage the environment, we only make problems for ourselves – increasing climate change, worsening flood risk, reducing biodiversity and often undermining the local economy. The Biosphere concept captures much of what we have been working towards. A fully-functioning Biosphere is one where businesses and communities are fully aware of the importance of the environment. This does not mean leaving it alone. Indeed, it might mean making more use of it, but in ways that allow the ecosystems to function, adding value to the products it generates and celebrating the importance of the land to the people who live on it now and those who have used it before. Biospheres offer the chance to develop new and dynamic approaches to local development and nature conservation. The Biosphere is currently looking for people interested in a collaborative project aimed at restoring special Biosphere habitats, find out more here.

The fact that there are Biospheres all around the World that are grappling with the same issues, means we can learn from each other and share ideas across borders and cultures. As we get better at developing truly sustainable local systems in our Biosphere, we can apply the lessons learnt to the wider area. The Southern Uplands Partnership is delighted to be part of the Biosphere Project and see it continuing to help local people to make integrated and sustainable development a reality.

14th Walking Festival

Kicking off on 6th May the week-long Newton Stewart Walking Festival, which features over thirty guided walks and evening events provides an excellent shop window for both the walking opportunities in the Biosphere and its wildlife and history. Several of the bigger walks offer the chance to access the wild core of the Biosphere in the company of personnel from Galloway Mountain Rescue Team. All walks are led by experienced and knowledgeable local leaders and several walks are accompanied by experts in wildlife, history and geology.

This year there is something of a raptor theme with Chris Rollie from RSPB giving an illustrated talk on Galloway raptors and several walks offering raptor viewing opportunities including the Threave ospreys and Bellymack red kites.  A geology –themed walk in Bargaly Glen, a farm walk at Carsluith or a stroll along the cliffs at Luce Bay in the company of a wildlife expert should all appeal to people wanting more insight into our natural environment and way of life.

Weather-permitting the highlight should be our first ever overnight walk along the Southern Upland Way to see the Dark Skies in the heart of the Biosphere in all their glory. Book now via the website or call the festival booking office on 01671 404500.

Six Star Species

In 2015 the East Ayrshire Coalfield Environment Initiative (CEI) ran an exciting new education programme to primary schools in the coalfield region of East Ayrshire. Primary pupils of New Cumnock, Auchinleck and Barshare were given the opportunity to champion ‘star species’ of the rare peatbog habitat in East Ayrshire.  By meeting wildlife experts and the 6 star species of sun dew, sphagnum moss, hen harrier, curlew, large heath butterfly and adder, they discovered what makes them so important. The CEI will be engaging with 3 new schools in 2016 and the project will culminate with a public exhibition – showcasing the children’s art work, demonstrating what they have learnt about their species and it’s habitat.

Biosphere inspired Woodcrafts

Aldaron Woodcrafts is a small rural business run by Gabriel Vindt and Iona Dunbar that has signed the Biosphere Charter. From their workshop at home in Glentrool Village surrounded by Galloway Forest Park they are inspired to make things that are useful as well as beautiful.  “We make everything by hand. Our designs are rustic, working in sympathy with the natural contours and twists of the wood. Most of our inspiration comes from spending lots of time outdoors and often we find ideas come to us as soon as we hold a piece of wood and start to work with it. Our designs are always changing and each item we make is unique.”

Gabriel and Iona use sustainably grown and harvested local hardwoods in their products. They buy wood from a local sawmill which processes timber from the estate where it is based and buy wood from organisations such as the RSPB who occasionally fell trees as part of the ongoing management of their reserves.

Off to Peru

Assist Social Capital is proud to have the opportunity to promote Galloway & Southern Ayrshire Biosphere at the 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Lima. Internationally there is growing awareness of Scotland as a leader in the field of social enterprise and the film shows Ayrshire Centre for Education as an excellent ambassador for the Biosphere, and social enterprises in general. The video was commissioned for our workshop on 'Economics in and around Biosphere Reserves' at the World Congress on 16th March and will play an integral part in the launch of OASIIS, an online global platform we are working on with support from the Scottish Government, to gather and promote examples of businesses that are working in harmony with their Biosphere (there are 651 Biosphere Reserves spread across 120 countries). Social enterprises compliment the aims of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme through their activities which are economically, environmentally and socially sustainable.
