One of the functions of the Biosphere is to foster a sustainable economy and society by encouraging activities that deliver services and products based on the social and environmental needs of the area. Economic activity based on Social Enterprise businesses is not only possible but already happening in Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere.
Assist Social Capital, an organisation based in Scotland, organised a Social Enterprise and Biosphere Reserves conference in Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere to develop a Social Enterprise and Biosphere Reserves framework.

Proceedings of the Conference included a filmed message from Mr Swinney, Deputy First Minister of Scotland and the Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Constitution and Economy, stating the importance of Social Enterprise in Biospheres. See the video clip here
At the 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves held in March 2016 in Lima, Peru will assess lessons learned and new challenges faced by the World Network of Biosphere Reserves and will develop and launch an Action Plan for Biosphere Reserves for 2016-2025. Assist Social Capital will be presenting the Social Enterprise and Biosphere Reserves framework along with some short films.
A film features Adventure Centre for Education, a Social Enterprise which uses the natural assets of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere as a resource to encourage people enjoy the outdoors.
