Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere is a member of the World Network of Biospheres which all come under the auspices of UNESCO – United Nations Educational, Scienctific and Cultural Organisation.
Over four decades, people across the globe have utilised biosphere reserves, designated under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, to explore local solutions to global challenges, thereby generating a wealth of experience and innovative potential for a sustainable future that emphasises the conservation of biodiversity.
MAB and its World Network of Biospheres are working towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals and contribute to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development both within biosphere reserves and through global dissemination of sustainable development models developed in biosphere reserves. This is guided through implementation of the MAB Strategy 2015-2020, which consists of vision and mission statements, a series of Strategic Objectives and Strategic Action Areas, and the associated Lima Action Plan 2016-2025.
UNESCO have also commissioned a number of reports linked to identifying the value of UNESCO designations to the UK that can be downloaded below.
